Highland Travel Tips
Spean Bridge is easier to reach than many first-time Highland visitors expect, but distances feel longer when weather closes in. These notes reflect what we tell guests booking for 2026 — whether you arrive by car from the Central Belt or by train on the West Highland Line.
By road
From Fort William, follow the A82 north-east for roughly twelve miles, then continue on the A86 towards Newtonmore. Faegour House is set back from the north side of the A86 about one mile east of Spean Bridge village — look for our sign shortly after the 30 mph limit when approaching from the village.
From Inverness, allow around ninety minutes via the A82 and A86. Winter drivers should carry warm clothing, a torch and a charged phone; snow gates can affect higher routes even when Spean Bridge itself is clear.
By rail
Spean Bridge station is on the Glasgow–Fort William–Mallaig line. Services run year-round, with extra summer capacity for walkers and Jacobite steam-day trippers. We can usually arrange a taxi from the station if you let us know your arrival time when you enquire.
What to pack
- Waterproof jacket and boots — even dry weeks can turn wet on the hills.
- Layers for evenings; our rooms are warm, but terrace views get breezy.
- OS Explorer map 385 or a downloaded route for Ben Nevis approaches.
- Midge repellent for calm summer evenings near Loch Lochy and Glen Spean.
